Why is This Here?
Hi there! In recent years, news and discoveries about climate change have done nothing but increase. This is a serious problem that has many varied and diverse effects on the world we live in. Everything, from the crops we need to survive on to every single animal that populates this earth is affected by this issue. This blog will aim to educate and spread awareness on the subject of climate change, especially in context of the snowy owl.
The snowy owl is an important focus for this subject as it is a species which is very dependent on a delicate habitat. Having undergone thousands of years of evolutionary selection to be able to survive the arctic habitat in which it lives, it is not very well adjusted to other climates. As temperatures change, so does the range in which this species can successfully predate and nest; and this isn't for the better. Along with this change in temperature directly affecting the areas in which the snowy owl can populate, there is also a bottom-up effect taking place as the natural habitats of the snowy owl's main prey, the lemming, is becoming compromised. These subjects will all be discussed in other pages in the blog. Enjoy your read!

There are a number of great things about your blog. I find the tight predator prey relationship between the snowy owl and the lemming very fascinating and as you said very sensitive to climate change. I do feel that you should add a few graphs or maps to further demonstrate this relationship, possibly showing range overlapping and predicted shits in future climates. Good job with incorporating pictures and your blog is very directed and easy to follow. Great work so far.
ReplyDeleteYou seem to have a strong connection between snowy owls and the direct threats to their prey, which is a nice addition to the range shift tab. I would recommend more information on climate change itself, some elaboration on what range shifts are projected, and another tab (at least two topics from class are required). Also - citations are a must from primary readings and other sources. The content on your tabs should probably be longer, just more information than is already there. Your blog seems well organized and is off to a good start.
ReplyDeleteWill, good intro to your blog. I like how you introduce all the topics that you plan on talking about later. Nice background. For your second sentence, i think you should just say increase instead of increased.
